If you read our "About" page and info about our festival vision, you'll get an idea of what we're trying to do with community in our area. We're trying to represent community with this festival more so than music. The vision with this coop is to tie together three of our local festivals: The Sioux River Folk Festival (a 40 year old festival in Canton, SD), The Rhythm of the River (a 15 year old music festival in Jackson, MN), and then the Montrose Music Festival (in Montrose, SD).
This will be a slow build, but we would like to not only share volunteer staff and advertising but we have changed a couple dates to have all three festivals three weekends in a row by next year. Not only to better serve festival goers, but also to keep some of the national music in our community for a little longer. By booking them in our local venues in between the festivals.
I believe we have a great local scene... but if we share, communicate, and work together we could afford to bring better music from other parts of the country as well as raise the payouts for working musicians in our local scene.
Most of all.... raise awareness of small town communities outside of Sioux Falls!!! It was all the farmers and small communities that built Sioux Falls and now all these small towns are falling apart and can't afford to keep their streets repaired, their grocery stores and swimming pools alive and open.
We hope to use music to draw attention to what's going on in these small communities. If we come TOGETHER and supported each other we would all have enough.
