Around Matt Fockler's hometown of Montrose, South Dakota, he specializes in dry-stack stone, mosaic tile, and other building projects that require an artist's touch.
Matt's other art is lesser known, outside of a few people who have been lucky enough to hear him sing around a campfire or in a friend's kitchen. For years, Matt and his friends traveled between Missouri, Texas, Montana, and South Dakota, working construction and remodeling jobs to pay their way. As they traveled, they wrote songs and sang them--often just for each other.
A gifted song-writer, two of Matt's songs were recently included on Jonathan Byrd and the Pick Up Cowboys' Latest album release. His songs have been covered by many notable Folk/Americana artists, including Jonathan Byrd, Charlie Roth, Anthony DaCosta, and the Steep Canyon Rangers.
Recorded throughout the years on a pit stop along the road trip between South Dakota and the Kerrville Music Festival in Texas, this album was finally released in 2022. Track titles included "Lakota Sioux," which made Matt a finalist in the 2009 Kerrville New Folk Artist competition. You can purchase a physical album through the link below or stream all ten tracks.
Matt's latest single was released to streaming platforms on February 18, 2024. Years ago, after receiving a beautiful, custom, hand-made guitar from his immensely talented friend, Bayard Blain, Matt really struggled to write his first song on it. Then, he wrote this tune about writing a song. It explores themes of friendship and wisdom.
